eBay XSS Redirect Scam Still Going 5 Days Later

eBay Item Number: 320499691440 has been running for nearly 6 Days out of a 7 Day Auction. It changes from an Auction to a BUY NOW after redirecting to harmonyebay.com where if you click that BUY NOW BUTTON it authenticates your confidential eBay user name and password and gives the scammer your eBay info.

From there the scammer will be sending you fake eBay emails instructing you to bank wire the money to the eBay Agent assigned to your transaction. This eBay Agent is somebody that fell for a work from home scam and accepts payment, keeps their 10-20% commission, then wire the balance to another party. The scammer will probably rinse the funds several times to cover his tracks.

Long story short – If you fall for this scam your money is gone! eBay will deny this ever existed and their VPP will not cover it either! So if you stumble on one of these redirect scams on eBay or eBay Motors don’t send the money to the scammer!

  • Perhaps I can just add to this that the best way to guard against being ripped off by online sales or auctions of any kind, eBay auto inlcuded, is to use a bona fide online escrow company. Although it does add some cost, that will take uncertainty out of the transaction.

For my money, the best bona fide online escrow (and there seems to be ten fraudulent escrow sites for every bona fide one) is probably Escrow.com (http://escrow.com). In fact, it’s the only one that eBay recommends.

    Take care,

  • I have been scammed by “Ebay VPP” and I lost over 7000$.

I immediately I reported to local police. The first word they told me that I would never get my money back. They also said they can locate or roughly locate them by their IP address. But the police would not go there to check since those the scammers are very smart. Also, they could not ask another state’s police to do that.

I paid through Western Union. I called western Union a few times and they could not release receiver’s information to me but to police. But, two day after I reported to police, western Union has not get any information from police yet. I went back to police again; they said they would let me know soon they got any information. One week passed now, I never heard any words from police.

During this week, The “VPP” site still on, I tried to chat them. But they hang up on me soon I told them who I was. I tried talk to local police; they said that they are busy and could not help me, and they treat me poorly like I am a criminal. I went to state police. And they said that they could not interrupt the local police’s investigation. I report to Federal, they said that they received thousand of claims a month and they could not deal with individually.
Here, you have it. Those scammers are relaxing and laughing now. They could not even feel worried or scared a little.

  • Ulf Wolf, Escrow is really not feasible due to the costs involved in vehicle transactions. On top of that Escrow opens the door to buyer fraud due to interpretation of the vehicles condition.

Best bet is to verify the vehicle and sellers legitimacy, request copy of title and sellers ID to be faxed to buyer, have an independent inspection done on the vehicle.

Helen, your scammer appears to be in Australia. Unfortunately your money is long gone. And without a copy of the eBay listing page there is no proof that it was ever on their website.
