Site changes have left these two subdomains unlinked from the sites DNS wasting oodles of previous back-links that could bring in sales. Even a hobbyist like Doc knows dead links are a no-no for serious webmasters. 🙄

C’mon guys.. This is beginning webmaster SEO stuff. How can a major corporation such as our example here leave this subdomain un-redirected? Wildcard redirect to a page with a search box so shoppers can find what there looking for. Over the years there is no telling how many backlinks are pointing to search.ebay.com going to waste!
The next eBay dead subdomain is motors.ebay.com. When execs moved their niche eBay Motors website to be part of the core site – they left it’s main entrance point dead!

- The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
- If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.

Why eBay moved their highest income generating niche site to the core is anyone’s best guess. Considering an automotive website requires specialty programmers effluent in the car business – it was probably a cost saving move.
It’s interesting that since Doc blogged this article: eBay Removes Mileage From Motor Vehicle Search Summary Pages. It appears the mileage is back. 😉
Sometimes constructive criticism is a good thing. For the life of me I’ll never understand how a major corporation could leave these two subdomains dead.
Wildcard redirect motors.ebay.com to the new eBay Motors url “ebay.com/motors.” And send old links from “search.ebay.com” to a search page.
Update 02/22/19: It’s been 8 months since this post was authored and both these subdomains are still dns unlinked hemorrhaging seo backlink juice.
eBay is laying off employees and restructuring the company. These are important issues that should be corrected ASAP. But execs continue strangling their golden goose! 🙄
